Imagine this scenario:

You live about one hours drive from the office, sometimes you work from home, sometimes you work in the office and sometimes you spend all day on customer sites. On the odd occasion you even travel abroad to work for a couple of days at a time. You have one contact number - your office based direct number.

You get up in the morning and whilst travelling to your first appointment someone calls you on your office number, you answer it on your mobile. Because your mobile is twinned to your desk phone it acts as another extension off your switch. At the end of the conversation the caller asks to be transferred to someone else in the office, that's no problem as your mobile is now an extension.

You attend your meeting and start making your way to the office, listening to your messages, both email and voicemail on the way. Just before you reach the office you receive another call, this call is still active as you walk into the office - you press one button on your desk phone and seamlessly transfer the call to your desk phone, the caller isn't even aware you've done it.

Just before you leave for the airport another call comes in, you answer it on your desk phone, speak for a while and then press a single button on your desk phone and seamlessly transfer the call, mid conversation, to your mobile so that you can get on your way.

A conference call has been timed to coincide with your wait in the airport, at 1pm you dial in from your mobile phone and join the conference. Once your contribution to the conference call is complete you excuse yourself and leave the conference call to catch your flight.
